Villages, landscapes and walks

The Luberon stretches across Vaucluse and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Hilltop villages, vineyards, olive groves, wooded valleys and ochre landscapes shape this part of Provence. The mountain range is a useful reference when planning journeys, while the villages and small towns offer starting points throughout the area.
North of the mountains, Gordes, Ménerbes, Lacoste and Bonnieux overlook the Calavon Valley. The Village des Bories, Sénanque Abbey and the Pont Julien are among the places to explore here. Around Roussillon and Apt, former ochre quarries, villages and country lanes suggest other itineraries.
To the south, Lourmarin, Cucuron, Vaugines and Ansouis lie between the foothills and the Durance. The Combe de Lourmarin, followed by the road between Lourmarin and Bonnieux, links the two sides of the range. When planning outings, allow for these crossings and winding roads rather than relying only on distances on the map.
A day out can combine a village, a market and a walk. The lanes of Gordes, Vieil-Oppède, the ochre landscapes of Roussillon and the Cedar Forest offer different ways to explore. Apt market and Lourmarin market also introduce local produce: fruit, olive oil, goat’s cheese, honey and Luberon wines.
Spring and autumn often offer milder weather for visits and walks. Summer brings lively markets, long days and evenings on café terraces; mornings are a good time for walks. Winter offers quieter village visits, but check opening times before setting out.
Start with the area you want to explore: Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux for hilltop villages; Roussillon and the Pays d’Apt for ochre landscapes; Lourmarin and Cucuron for the southern side. Public transport is too limited to explore the Luberon’s villages and sights easily without a car. Cycling can be an alternative for those used to hills and longer distances, preferably in spring or autumn to avoid the intense summer heat.
