Anduze: Gardon, Bambouseraie and gateway to the Cévennes
Anduze, a Gardon town at the foot of the Cévennes
Anduze lies in the Gard, where the first Cévennes valleys begin. The town stands near the Gardon d’Anduze, below the Saint-Julien rock. It long occupied a passage position between the Gard plain, Protestant valleys and routes towards Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
Protestant history
Anduze was an important centre of Cévennes Protestantism. This history can be read through temples, former places of worship and nearby sites. In Mialet, the Musée du Désert presents the period of persecutions, clandestine assemblies and Huguenot memory linked to the Cévennes.
Bambouseraie and Cévennes steam train
The Bambouseraie de Prafrance, in Générargues, is one of the best-known sites near Anduze. The Cévennes steam train links Anduze to Saint-Jean-du-Gard along the valley and railway structures. These two visits offer different approaches to the local landscape: acclimatisation garden and Cévennes valley.
Gardon, walking and bathing
The surroundings are suited to walking, cycling and bathing depending on season and water level. Roads towards Saint-Jean-du-Gard, Mialet and neighbouring valleys quickly lead to more mountainous landscapes.
