Blauzac, a village of the Uzège

Uzès

A hilltop village emblematic of the landscapes of the Uzège

A village in the Uzège

Blauzac, in the Gard region, reveals itself atop a wide hill overlooking the road linking Uzès to Nîmes. In its elevated lanes, time seems to slow, held back by the memory of those who shaped its golden stones, softened by sun and wind. Through its architecture and the atmosphere that pervades it, Blauzac reflects the character of the Uzège’s villages.

A landscape of garrigue and vineyards

All around, the countryside shelters a remarkable concentration of capitelles, the traditional dry-stone shepherds’ huts. A pleasant walk allows visitors to discover several of them, particularly in the Librotte woods, where one finds “The Three Huts”, patiently restored by a local association committed to preserving this rural heritage.

An ancient human presence

Today Blauzac is a peaceful place, between the lively towns of Uzès and Nîmes and close to the tourist attractions of the Gorges du Gardon and the Pont du Gard. Its privileged location explains a very ancient human presence: traces of settlement date back to the Neolithic, as shown by the statue-menhir discovered in the village. The castle appeared in the 12th century and was spared by the destruction of the Wars of Religion and the Revolution. Its subsequent transformations have preserved its defensive silhouette. It now hosts charming accommodation.

Facing the castle, the church raises its bell tower above the rooftops. The village also has a Protestant temple, built in the early 19th century: a sober building, a witness to a religious history that was sometimes complex, yet rooted in the life of the community.

The horizon stretching toward mountains and plains

From the top of the hill, the panorama unfolds northward toward the land of Uzès, Mont Bouquet and Mont Ventoux. To the west, the horizon meets the Pic Saint-Loup and the heights of Mont Lozère, which preside over the Cévennes.

Blauzac is a place inviting you to pause and take in the strength of a land shaped by sun and stone, marked by a human presence stretching back millennia.
