The Lake of Sainte-Croix
An Artificial Oasis
The spectacular Gorges du Verdon suddenly widen
to reveal the Lake of Sainte-Croix.
Created in 1973 following the construction of the eponymous dam, this lake is the second-largest
artificial lake
in Europe, covering an area of 22 km² and with a capacity of 760 million cubic meters. Although
man-made,
it harmoniously blends into the Provençal landscape, offering a true oasis of freshness.
A Popular Destination for Water Activities
The Lake of Sainte-Croix is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Its crystal-clear waters,
with turquoise reflections, invite activities such as canoeing, kayaking, pedal boating, and even
sailing.
The more adventurous can venture into the rushing waters of the Gorges for activities like rafting
and canyoning. For swimmers, several supervised beaches provide the opportunity to enjoy this idyllic
setting in peace.
A natural and ecological treasure
In addition to its recreational activities, the Lake of Sainte-Croix serves as a sanctuary for local
fauna and flora.
Its shores are home to numerous species of aquatic and migratory birds. The exceptional quality of the
water,
thanks to strict regulations banning motorized boats, makes it a preserved area, ideal for nature
lovers.
The picturesque villages around
The shores of the lake are dotted with charming villages where time seems to stand still.
Bauduen, nestled by the water, enchants visitors with its medieval streets and tranquil
atmosphere.
Sainte-Croix-sur-Verdon,
perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
These welcoming villages also host Provençal markets, where visitors can discover local delicacies such
as
lavender honey and olive oil.
An essential stop in Provence
Whether you are seeking adventure, relaxation, or discovery, the Lake of Sainte-Croix offers countless
possibilities.
Located on the border between the departments of the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Var,
at the crossroads of routes between the Verdon Regional Natural Park and the
Lavender Plateaus of Valensole, it is an ideal stop to explore the richness of
Provence.
