Roussillon is a hilltop village perched on a high hill in the Calavon valley, facing the Luberon massif. It is famous for its colors, as the intensive mining of ocher around the village has created a surprising and fantastic landscape that displays all shades of ocher, a true delight for the eyes. Before attracting tourists and visitors from around the world, Roussillon was also discovered by painters who were inspired by its unique colors.
The village has a rich artistic and cultural history. Many artists, including some of world renown, found inspiration in the colorful landscapes of Roussillon. The picturesque streets and ocher-colored houses add to the village's unique charm.
A conservatory of ocher and color, called Ôkhra, was established in a former ocher factory. This conservatory is dedicated to preserving and promoting ochers and natural pigments. Visitors can learn about the techniques for extracting and processing ochers, as well as participate in painting and artistic creation workshops.
The hiking trails around Roussillon offer panoramic views of the ocher cliffs and surrounding hills. Photography and nature enthusiasts will find an ideal playground here to capture spectacular images.
Today, Roussillon is an essential tourist destination in Provence. Visitors can explore the village, visit the ocher conservatory, and enjoy the many local cafes and restaurants. The weekly market also provides an opportunity to discover local products and regional crafts.
