Apt, a sub-prefecture of Vaucluse, is the main town of the Luberon. Located in the Calavon valley, a river usually calm but capable of becoming torrential during heavy rains, Apt occupies a central position close to the famous ochre lands of Gargas, Rustrel, and Roussillon.
Famous for its candied fruits, of which it claims to be the capital, Apt is classified as a "remarkable site of taste." Its weekly market, held every Saturday morning, is highly popular in the region. The town is also renowned for its traditional pottery craftsmanship.
Not far from Apt, the village of Bonnieux, perched on a promontory, offers an impressive view. It marks the entrance to the Lourmarin Pass, the main communication route crossing the Luberon massif from north to south.
At the foot of Bonnieux, the Pont Julien, a remarkably well-preserved Roman bridge, spans the capricious Calavon River. This historic structure, standing for more than two millennia, is a testament to the skill of ancient builders.
Facing Bonnieux, the village of Lacoste stands out for its picturesque charm and fascinating past. Dominated by the ruins of the Marquis de Sade’s castle, this location invites both contemplation and exploration.
