Perched on a rocky outcrop, the village of Les Baux de Provence resembles a true medieval eagle's nest. The breathtaking site, nestled in the peaks of the picturesque Alpilles, attracts many visitors each year eager to immerse themselves in the landscapes and the history of this unique place.
Visiting Les Baux de Provence offers a glimpse into a fascinating history. The Lords of Les Baux were among the most prestigious Provençal families, known for their pride and independence. Sheltered in their impregnable fortress, they long resisted the authority of distant overlords, feared by their enemies and the people of Provence.
Under the rule of the French king following the annexation of Provence in 1481, the once lively village was abandoned by its inhabitants from the 17th century onward, to the point where it was nearly forgotten by the early 20th century.
In the heart of a spectacular environment, the Val d’Enfer features strange and twisted rock formations sculpted by wind and rain, offering a breathtaking spectacle.
The Château of Les Baux de Provence was built in the 11th century by the powerful Lords of Les Baux, atop a dizzying cliff. This rebellious and impregnable fortress was besieged in 1632 by Richelieu, minister of King Louis XIII, and later dismantled. It fell into oblivion until its tourism revival in the 20th century.
Visiting the Château, which dominates the horizon, allows you to marvel at panoramic views of the Alpilles mountains and the Camargue plain, stretching to the Mediterranean Sea.
A short walk from the village, the Carrières de Lumières offers very popular shows. Large images are projected onto the walls of the former underground quarry, creating a truly immersive visual and sound experience in three dimensions.
Visiting the village of Les Baux de Provence is an opportunity to escape the present for a journey through time in an exceptional setting, living up to its reputation as an iconic destination in Provence.
