Bed and breakfasts and stays near Les Baux-de-Provence
Les Baux-de-Provence, a hilltop village in the Alpilles
A site built on rock
Les Baux-de-Provence stand on a rocky spur above the southern side of the Alpilles. The village, castle ruins and views towards the Crau plain, Arles and the Camargue form a strongly mineral site, shaped by pale stone and sharp changes in relief.
The village can be busy, but it retains a particular strength early in the morning, in the evening or outside the high season. Lanes, passages, old houses and viewpoints recall the former power of this small fortified town.
The Lords of Les Baux and the castle
The Lords of Les Baux were among the great families of medieval Provence. Established in a fortress that was difficult to take, they long asserted their independence from neighboring powers. The castle, built on the edge of the cliff, helps explain the defensive logic of the site.
After Provence was annexed to the French crown, the village gradually lost its political role. The fortress was dismantled in the seventeenth century, then rediscovered in the twentieth century with the rise of tourism in the Alpilles.
Val d’Enfer and Carrières de Lumières
Below the village, Val d’Enfer presents rock forms shaped by erosion and former quarrying. This landscape has fed many stories and gives the site an atmosphere quite different from the neighboring olive plains.
Nearby, the Carrières de Lumières use the volumes of a former underground quarry for monumental projections. The venue complements a visit to the village, but the small roads around Maussane, Le Paradou, Fontvieille and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence are also worth taking time for.
