Getaway in Avignon
The chapel of the Saint-Bénézet Bridge
Set on the arches of the Pont d’Avignon, the Saint-Bénézet Chapel preserves the memory of its holy founder.
A Chapel on the Pont d’Avignon
The Saint-Bénézet Bridge is one of the most visible landmarks of Avignon. Its chapel, set on the central pier of the four remaining arches, gives the bridge its instantly recognizable silhouette and recalls that this monument was not only a crossing over the Rhône, but also a place of devotion, storytelling and movement between the City of the Popes and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
A Medieval Chapel on the Rhône
Built from the 12th century onward, the Saint-Bénézet Bridge was a bold structure for its time. It linked Avignon to the right bank of the Rhône and opened the route toward Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Partially destroyed today, the site still brings together Avignon’s urban history, the memory of the river and the legend of Bénézet.
The Legend of Bénézet in Stone
The chapel and the bridge are inseparable from the legend of Saint Bénézet, a young shepherd who was said to have been guided by angels to build a bridge at this precise location. The chapel was erected after the saint’s death to house his relics and become a site of pilgrimage. Its architecture belongs to the Provençal Romanesque style, with an arcade resting on six columns forming its sole decoration. The vaulted roof, once at risk of collapse, was replaced in the 17th century.
During the 17th century, as the bridge fell into ruin, the saint’s relics were transferred to the Celestine Convent, and in the 18th century to Saint Didier Church, where they remain today. Although Bénézet was never formally canonized, Pope John XXII officially recognized his sanctity.
The Rhône, Avignon and Barthelasse Island
Beyond its historical and spiritual interest, the Saint-Bénézet Chapel gains its full meaning from the Rhône landscape. The river runs along the medieval ramparts, below the Rocher des Doms and the Palace of the Popes, then opens toward the low-lying land of Barthelasse Island. From the bridge, Avignon appears as a city of stone, river and light.
Rising above the Rhône, the Saint-Bénézet Chapel offers a simple and powerful entry into Avignon’s history. It connects the legend of the young shepherd, the medieval strength of the city and the landscapes that still surround it. The visit is short, but it helps explain the meaning of the city within its immediate surroundings: the old centre, Barthelasse Island, the Rocher des Doms and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
