Cannes: cinema, seafront and old town

Cannes lies in the Alpes-Maritimes, on the French Riviera. The city is known for its film festival, but it is not limited to that event. It brings together a highly urban seafront, beaches, the old Suquet district, a harbour, large hotels and islands close to the coast.

The Cannes Film Festival

Founded in 1946, the Cannes Film Festival gave the city international visibility in the film industry. For several days, screenings, the film market, conferences and professional meetings concentrate activity around the Palais des Festivals and La Croisette. Outside the festival period, these places remain part of the city’s recent history.

La Croisette

La Croisette runs along the Bay of Cannes. Beaches, gardens, shops, hotels and apartment buildings reflect the development of tourism on this part of the coast. The Martinez, Carlton and Majestic are among the boulevard’s architectural landmarks, along with the Palais des Festivals at its western end.

The Lérins Islands

Facing Cannes, the Lérins Islands offer a clear contrast with the city. Sainte-Marguerite is known for its paths, pine trees, coves and Fort Royal. Smaller Saint-Honorat is home to a monastic community and cultivated land. Boat crossings add a quieter stage to a stay on the coast.

Le Suquet and urban heritage

The Suquet district overlooks the harbour and the bay. Its older streets, Notre-Dame d’Espérance church and castle remains recall the medieval origins of Cannes. The city also retains several villas built in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when seasonal residences transformed the coast.

Around Cannes

Cannes is a convenient base for nearby visits: Antibes for its harbour, ramparts and Picasso Museum, Grasse for the history of perfume, and Mandelieu-La Napoule for its seaside castle and access towards the Esterel massif.
